Its author is Abu al-Husayn Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Naysaburi (206-261 AH / 821-875 CE). He arranged the hadiths by subject and gathered different narrations of the same report together, producing an arrangement highly valued for text criticism.
Sahih Muslim is known for the soundness of its chains and its careful classification. Together with al-Bukhari it is called the 'Sahihayn' and ranks among the highest authorities in the Islamic scholarly tradition.
